Have you ever gotten very nervous before talking to someone in English or even in your own language? Maybe you had a presentation to give and before the presentation your hands got all sweaty or your heart started to beat faster. Speaking anxiety is not a fun thing to go through. How can you deal with speaking anxiety, how can you become a more confident speaker. This article is going to speak specifically about that and give you some good tips to use.
Tips for Dealing with English Speaking Anxiety
The very first tip is the importance of breathing. What does this do? It calms your heart. Scientists have proven that just by breathing you calm yourself down and relax your heart. this is something that you can do especially in a speaking test, a lot of my students have to complete the speaking section in either the IELTS or TOEFL test and at some point they make a mistake and they start to panic, my advice to them is to take a deep breath to relax themselves and continue.
If you have a speaking test and you start to feel nervous beforehand, my advice is to go for a walk, even if it is just a walk around the room. This sends a signal to your brain and it will naturally have a calming effect on you.
The way your brain works, the more practice you get the more automatic it becomes. You will naturally use the same expressions again and again and again, you won’t have to think about them because they will become automatic.
This is something a lot of English learners forget, when you meet a native speaker you will think wow this person speaks so beautifully, what a lot of English learners don’t realise is that native speakers make mistakes all the time. They make small mistakes, vocabulary mistakes, they have what is sometimes called a slip of the tongue when something comes out incorrectly. It is normal to make mistakes and people don’t judge you harshly on your small English mistakes. So don’t judge yourself too harshly it is ok to make mistakes, in fact the best way to learn a language is by making mistakes.
